My most recent gastronomic assignment took me into the East Village area right next to PETCO Park for some dinner time Good Eats! The venue was none other than the local legend for all things Mexican food. I got to hit up all the heavy hitters and—even though I had been here before—I left very full and over the top impressed! I think you will too after seeing what I got to feast on! Shall we begin?
Juan got me all taken care of by making sure my menu items were spot on ready for me when walking in the door. I staked a table, set up shop and was ready to experience a food fiesta of amazing Mexican fare!
I started with the Carne Asada Fries, which was made from choice Black Angus beef with guacamole, sour cream, cheddar, and cotija cheese over a bed of French fries. The pictures say it all! A wonderful blend of the best of the best! Every bite of this staple finger food is an explosion of flavor. Once you start, you cannot stop!
Next is my personal favorite burrito, the Tsunami Burrito. The Tsunami Burrito is made from carne asada from choice Black Angus beef, grilled shrimp, cabbage, guacamole, jack cheese, and salsa Mexicana. This sucker is basically foodie gold wrapped in a fresh hot tortilla! It is packed full of succulent, tender shrimp and steak with a side of fresh guacamole, melty cheese and house salsa.
Next up is the Carne Asada Chimichanga which is carne asada from choice Black Angus beef, topped with lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, salsa Mexicana, cheddar, and cotija cheese. Other chimi’s yearn for the day that they look, taste and smell like this chimichanga! Superior outer crunch with key toppings to kick up the flavor even more. Then the outside is packed with meats and fresh goodness you can sink your teeth into!
Pushing onward, I hit the Super Rolled Tacos, which has a choice of beef, chicken or potato. Five rolled tacos with lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, salsa Mexicana, cheddar and cotija cheese. The toppings make these even better than they already are as every bite gets you a nice hunk of toppings. The beef option I ate was bomb! Crispy outside with a moist punch of flavorful ground beef on the inside. Dip them in the green and red house salsa for sure!
I move onto the Shrimp Taco which consisted of grilled shrimp, lettuce, salsa Mexicana, and Lolita’s Salsa Blanca on a soft corn tortilla. This is a honking sized taco! Good portion, big shrimp and loaded with toppings! Two or three of the shrimp tacos make for a full meal easily. The Salsa Blanca is the key to this amazing but simple taco star.
Speaking of Mexican staples, this one sets the standard! The Chicken Quesadilla is shredded chicken, bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes, with your choice of cheddar or jack cheese. No need to be complicated! Keep it real, keep the ingredients solid and you wind up with cheesy melty goodness few can resist!
I go out with a bang! The Carne Asada Torta is made from choice Black Angus beef with lettuce, guacamole and salsa Mexicana. This was my favorite item of the night as I love a good torta! Fortunately, this torta soaked up the carne asada juices. The super fresh and flavorful guacamole is a good contrast to the meat and the salsa adds just enough kick to round out a supreme torta experience!
So, if you’re looking for a great place to find an affordable meal before, during or after a Padres game or just a great restaurant to find out of the ordinary Mexican fare, this is your place! Juan and his staff are awesome people—providing great service and spectacular food. The whole family is gonna find something they love here! This is where cravings are born! I’m just warning you now!
