Sandbox pizza is located on the corner of Grand Avenue and Cass Street, right in the heart of Pacific Beach, only moments from the water. It is a locally owned, dog friendly, business centered on providing a great customer experience! They offer a wide variety of different and fun pizzas, as well as some awesome wings, appetizers, sandwiches, and salad. There is something for everyone!
Sandbox pizza prides itself on hand-making its own unique dough, using only the freshest ingredients, and never cutting corners! It is not the thin NY style, nor is it your thick crust Chicago style. It’s something in between—Sandbox style—which is unique and tasty!
Since their opening towards the end of 2016, they have become extremely popular! So, I was very excited to finally check this place out!
The first thing you notice as you walk up is the tiki style of the outdoor bar area. With plenty of outdoor seating, you are sure to enjoy the beautiful breezy climate of sunny San Diego. Inside the restaurant/bar, try your hand at one of the classic arcade games or play a game of pool to pass the time as you enjoy your beer. The atmosphere is relaxed. The TVs are large and plentiful, so that you can watch your favorite game. The bar is quite popular for a few afternoon drinks among the locals! It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a long day. Or just to enjoy your day off!
Being a lover of the outdoors, I chose a table on the patio to enjoy my meal. I was driving, so I ordered a water. However, their beer list is quite extensive, serving a wide variety for whatever your heart may desire! They also serve cocktails and wine for those of you who are not on the beer wagon.
So, sit back, relax, grab a beer, and enjoy this beautiful San Diego weather while you peruse the awesome menu!
On this trip, we ordered the Super Cheesy Bread, Not Your Mama’s Meatballs, Sealeg Poppers, Sriracha BBQ Wings, the Greek Salad, Vintage Charlie Calzone, the Marley sandwich, Tony Soprano Pie, Hot Chester Pizza, Pesto Punk Pizza, Choco-Lava cake, and the Ice Cream Cookie Sammie to top it all off!
A great way to start is with the Super Cheesy Bread. Hand kneaded dough topped with a generous amount of gooey cheese, brushed with garlic and served with the most amazing marinara sauce—this is sure to get your taste buds warmed up! The marinara sauce is perfectly sweet and spicy with a wonderful zesty goodness!
Next-up were the Not Your Mama’s Meatballs. Four large beef meatballs smothered in that oh-so-delicious marinara sauce and topped with mozzarella cheese. We’ve got another winner here! The meatballs are deliciously tender, juicy and cooked to perfection!
What trip to a pizza joint is complete without wings? I ordered the Sriracha BBQ Wings, which had the perfect amount of spicy and sweet! Served crispy and gooey with a side of carrots, celery and of course Ranch dressing. Blue cheese dressing was also offered. If Sriracha BBQ is not your things, they have a wide range of different wings to choose from.
Then came the Sealeg Poppers, which are stuffed with Cajun seasoned shrimp, spicy peppers and cream cheese. Then they are fried to perfection and served with a side of ranch dressing. Just a note – the poppers are also wonderful when dipped in the marinara! The Sealeg Poppers were awesome! My favorite appetizer of the day!
After getting my fill of appetizers, it was time to cool my palate with a nice fresh salad. I ordered the Greek salad with chicken and it was sooo good! Served with roasted artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, sliced red onions, green olives, sliced chicken breast, feta cheese, and a balsamic vinaigrette—this salad is most definitely a quality meal!
Now for the main dishes. The first up was the Vintage Charlie Calzone. A classic calzone stuffed with their delicious marinara, garlic, sausage, onion, and of course mozzarella. This calzone was packed full of flavor with no need for that awkward dipping you normally experience with calzones!
I then ordered the Marley sandwich. Bistro buttermilk, pulled chicken, bacon, onions, tomatoes, and pepper jack cheese—all between two perfectly toasted pieces of bread. This was a seriously tasty sandwich!
And now—the pizzas! The first was the popular Tony Soprano Pie. If you enjoy a rich meaty pizza, this one is for you! Made with red sauce and topped with sliced meatballs, salami, banana peppers, roasted red peppers, mozzarella, and that oh so rich and delicious ricotta cheese. This is one of my personal favorites!
Feeling daring? Then order the Hot Chester Pizza made with a ranch-based garlic sauce, chicken, mozzarella, and…wait for it… Hot Cheetos. Talk about a fun pizza!
If you’re looking for something a touch lighter, try the Pesto Punk Pizza. Made with a basil pesto sauce and topped with pulled chicken, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, mozzarella, and ricotta cheese. This pie is packed full of amazing flavor!
And what better way to finish this meal off than with a Choco-Lava Cake and an Ice Cream Cookie Sammie. As if dinner wasn’t filling enough! The Choco-Lava cake was served warm with a molten center and a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream. The Ice Cream Cookie Sammie was a generous helping of vanilla ice cream served in between two gourmet chocolate chip cookies. It was the perfect ending to an amazing meal!
Just a few blocks from the beach, this is the perfect place to stop for a cool drink and a bite after a nice day at the beach. Enjoy a fresh, made from scratch pizza, some pretty amazing wings, delicious meatballs, or maybe just an ice cream cookie sandwich. Or a little taste of everything! Now that’s my style!
